The Trust
The Working Woodlands Trust aims to promote the sustainable use of woodlands and their products for the benefit of both wildlife and people. Its objectives are:
-
To promote the use of locally produced woodland products. -
To provide support for sustainable wood based businesses. -
To provide innovative and enjoyable educational events relating to the sustainable use of woodlands. -
To provide advice and support for community based initiatives that relate to woodlands.
The Working Woodlands Trust was established in 1997 by a group of professional woodland workers. The Trust evolved after five years of practical experience in running educational events for the public and promoting sustainable woodland management in and around South Yorkshire, England.
The formation of the Trust will enabled us to build on our successes and attract more expertise and funding to our events. This has brought our message to a wider audience whilst helping to restore local woodlands for the benefit of wildlife and people. We are in the process of trying to establishing a permanent site where courses can be run, that would form a focal point for Crafts people and be a visitor attraction. This is likely to be at Ecclesall Woods Sawmill site If you are interested in attending any craft or other kind of rural/traditional training course such a Timber frame building or basket weaving etc. PLEASE send us an email and tell us what you would like.
Internationally
The Rio Earth Summit of 1992 acknowledged the essential nature of forestry for the well-being of the planet and marked the first ever global agreement on forest principles. The need to make future development sustainable was clearly recognised. The development of the Working Woodlands Trust will mean that by acting Locally we are thinking Globally.
