Bowl Turning

A country turner who made bowls for domestic use, mainly in sycamore and elm, using a pole lathe, with a range of turning gouges and chisels.

One specialty was making a set of nested bowls, each smaller than the other, from a single block. This was done with a special curved chisel, known as a hook chisel, which under-cut a narrow groove forming the inside of the larger and the outside of the smaller bowls. The bowls were then separated and finished on the pole lathe.
